Arch Coal Colo. Mine Expansion Blocked By Federal Judge
Law360 (November 8, 2019, 9:21 PM EST) -- A Colorado federal judge on Friday blocked a planned expansion of an Arch Coal mine that would allow nearly 18 million tons of new coal to be removed, finding that the U.S. Department of the Interior flubbed its environmental review.
U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson found that the expansion would result in new methane drainage wells, which would mean more greenhouse gas emissions, and that the government never examined alternatives to venting, as environmental groups, as the High Country Conservation Advocates and Sierra Club argued that it should have done.
