Official Says No Clear Reason For Small Biz Contractor Drop

Law360 (September 15, 2020, 10:42 PM EDT) -- A senior U.S. Small Business Administration official acknowledged Tuesday that the number of small firms undertaking federal work had declined despite a record number of contracts awarded in 2019, saying he had only anecdotal evidence to explain the issue.

The SBA's recent small business scorecard showed that federal agencies had awarded $132.9 billion to small business contractors in fiscal year 2019, accounting for 26.5% of their total prime contracting dollars, both record highs.

But those headline numbers had obscured issues including the fact that the base of federal small business contractors shrunk by about 9% in a single year, from 113,135...
