San Diego Schools Sued Over 'Insult' Of Mural Destruction

Law360 (February 26, 2021, 9:12 PM EST) -- Artist and Chicano-rights activist Salvador Torres has accused the San Diego Unified School District and a contractor of violating federal copyright and California state art-protection law when they destroyed a mural he painted for the school district in 1988.

The state court suit, filed Thursday, claims the city and contractor Balfour Beatty Construction's demolition of the mural at Memorial Junior High School in September was an insult to Torres and harmful to his "honor and reputation," on top of being a violation of the federal Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990.
