Ill. Drug-Flushing Law Takes Effect In New Year

Law360, New York (December 22, 2009, 6:23 PM EST) -- A new Illinois law is set to go into effect in the coming year prohibiting health care institutions from flushing unused medication into the public water supply, leading the charge in a national effort to address health and environmental concerns over drug traces in water systems.

The Safe Pharmaceutical Disposal Act will go into effect Jan. 1 and will apply to a wide range of providers including hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care and home health care facilities, hospice programs and others, according to state officials....
