Ex-Mayer Brown Partner Gets 7 Years For Refco Fraud

Law360, New York (January 14, 2010, 7:24 PM EST) -- Former Mayer Brown LLP partner Joseph P. Collins was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday for his alleged role in a $2.4 billion fraud that felled erstwhile brokerage giant Refco Inc.

Judge Robert Patterson of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York imposed the sentence.

On July 10, 2009, Collins, the former head of Mayer Brown's derivatives group and Refco's chief outside counsel, was found guilty following a nine-week jury trial of one count of conspiracy, two counts of securities fraud,...
