Chevron Disputes Ecuador's Bid To Stay Arbitration

Law360, New York (January 20, 2010, 12:46 PM EST) -- Chevron Corp. has moved to dismiss the Republic of Ecuador's petition to stay an international arbitration proceeding that would allow Chevron to short-circuit $27 billion in claims related to alleged environmental damages in the Amazon, saying the arbitration must proceed under a bilateral investment treaty between the U.S. and Ecuador.

Chevron lodged its motion Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, where Ecuador on Dec. 3 first filed the lawsuit in an attempt to block the oil giant from pursuing...
