NYC Ordered To Mitigate Race Bias In Fire Department

Law360, New York (January 21, 2010, 6:59 PM EST) -- A judge ruled Thursday that New York City will have to pay unspecified monetary damages to minority firefighter applicants, hire 293 who claim they were kept out of the city's fire department because of discriminatory tests and rewrite the tests in question.

But Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York stopped short of calling for minority hiring quotas, saying discrimination was so entrenched at the fire department that a more long-term solution was needed for the problem....
