Union Membership Plunges 800K, Report Shows

Law360, New York (January 25, 2010, 4:51 PM EST) -- The percentage of U.S. workers in unions stayed about level in 2009, but the number of memberships dropped nearly 800,000 as overall employment rates fell, a new report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has revealed.

About 12.3 percent of American wage and salary earners were members of unions in 2009, essentially unchanged from the 12.4 percent in 2008, according to the bureau's 2009 membership summary, released Friday.
