DHS Watchdog Urges Emptying Of Private NM Migrant Lockup

By Mike LaSusa (March 18, 2022, 8:58 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's internal watchdog, in a report released Friday, called for all immigration detainees to be transferred out of a privately run New Mexico facility, citing "critical" staffing shortages and "excessive" sanitation problems.

The DHS Office of Inspector General said it found "egregious conditions" during an unannounced inspection in early February at the Torrance County Detention Facility in Estancia, New Mexico.

"We recommend the immediate relocation of all detainees from the facility unless and until the facility ensures adequate staffing and appropriate living conditions," the inspector general said.
