Alpharma To Pay $42.5M Over Morphine Marketing

Law360, New York (March 16, 2010, 6:55 PM EDT) -- Pharmaceutical giant Alpharma Inc. has agreed to fork over $42.5 million to resolve allegations that it paid health care providers to promote its morphine-based drug Kadian and misrepresented the medicine's safety.

The settlement, announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Justice, will be split between the federal government and several states, with the U.S. receiving roughly $33.6 million to resolve the federal claims and the states receiving approximately $8.9 million to settle their respective claims.
