E.U. Sues Sweden Over Foreign Pension Fund Taxes

Law360, New York (January 9, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- The European Commission said Tuesday that it is referring Sweden to the European Court of Justice for its allegedly anti-competitive practices against foreign pension funds.

The E.C. contends that Swedish pension tax laws are discriminatory, since pension insurance premiums paid by employers into Swedish-based funds are treated more favorably than those paid to insurers with funds in other countries.

Premiums paid by employers for insurance taken with companies outside of Sweden are taxed as salary in the hands of the employee, while pension payments are exempt...
