Dem Immigration Plan Includes New Hiring Guidelines

Law360, New York (April 29, 2010, 7:22 PM EDT) -- An immigration reform proposal announced Thursday by Senate Democratic leaders would require employers to verify the work status of new employees through new biometric Social Security cards and increase monetary penalties for illegally hiring workers by 300 percent.

The proposal, called Real Enforcement with Practical Alternatives for Immigration Reform, was prepared by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.; and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J.
