Senate Prepares To Scrutinize US Air, Delta Merger

Law360, New York (January 22, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- With US Airways Group Inc.’s $10.2 billion hostile bid for bankrupt Delta Air Lines Inc. still up in the air, the Senate Commerce Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on how airline mergers are likely to affect consumers.

Though Congress has no legal authority to reject a merger, it can put a lot of pressure on the Department of Justice and other government agencies. Already, a number of senators have expressed concern over the size of the deal.
