Steinbeck Heirs Sue Estate Over Copyrights,Trademarks

Law360, New York (July 15, 2004, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The heirs of author John Steinbeck have sued the estate of his third wife, Elaine Steinbeck, over royalties and copyrights to classics such as “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Of Mice and Men,” and “East of Eden.”

The lawsuit, filed by the late writer's son, Thomas Steinbeck, and granddaughter, Blake Smyle, was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeking greater ownership of the works monetary damages of at least $18 million.
