Schumer Urges FTC To Probe Caffeinated Malt Drinks

Law360, New York (July 12, 2010, 4:15 PM EDT) -- Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has asked the Federal Trade Commission to launch an investigation into caffeine-infused flavored malt beverages, saying the products are explicitly designed to attract underage drinkers.

The senator told FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz that the promotion of beverages such as Four Loko and Joose is “extremely troubling.” Schumer asked the FTC in the letter publicly released Monday to update its study on alcohol marketing and youth to include an investigation of the latest marketing practices and products offered by the industry.
