Acacia Unit Sues Garmin, Others Over Map Patent

Law360, New York (August 17, 2010, 2:03 PM EDT) -- A unit of Acacia Patent Acquisition LLC has accused Garmin Ltd., TomTom Inc., Nike Inc. and several other companies of infringing a patent that covers technology for interactive maps on the Internet.

WebMap Technologies LLC filed suit against Garmin, TomTom, Nike, Globalmotion Media Inc. and on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

The complaint alleges that the companies have violated U.S. Patent Number 6,772,142, titled “Method and apparatus for collecting and expressing geographically referenced data.”
