Obama Installs Top Food Safety Official

Law360, New York (August 20, 2010, 11:22 AM EDT) -- With a massive egg recall sparking new fears about the adequacy of U.S. food safety controls, President Barack Obama has opted to use a recess appointment to bypass Congress and install Dr. Elisabeth Hagen as undersecretary for food safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Hagen was one of four recess appointments Obama announced Thursday, with congressmen out of town on their August recess.
