UnitedHealth Rejects Liability For Projected $9.9B Fine

Law360, New York (September 8, 2010, 6:13 PM EDT) -- UnitedHealth Group Inc. is rebutting California regulators' claims that the health insurer's PacifiCare unit mishandled hundreds of thousands of medical claims and may be liable for fines of up to $9.9 billion.

In a statement Wednesday, UnitedHealth said the allegations the California Department of Insurance filed before the state’s Office of Administrative Hearings are “simply not true."

UnitedHealth spokeswoman Cheryl Randolph said PacifiCare has “met or exceeded all applicable claims processing standards, including standards expressly agreed upon” by the insurance regulator.
