EU Court Deals Blow To Austria's Gambling Monopoly

Law360, New York (September 9, 2010, 3:03 PM EDT) -- The European Union's highest court found Thursday that Austria’s casino monopoly clashes with EU law and improperly blocks foreign companies from setting up shop.

In the second ruling against state gambling monopolies in two days, the European Court of Justice determined Thursday that Austria’s casino monopoly discriminates against outside companies and lacks a transparent and competitive process for awarding the handful of permitted casino licenses.
