Consumers Hit 'OPEC Of Potatoes' With Antitrust Action

Law360, New York (September 29, 2010, 5:51 PM EDT) -- A group of Wisconsin consumers has launched a putative class action against the United Potato Growers of America Inc. and related organizations, saying they conspired to raise the price of potatoes by drastically reducing supplies beginning in 2004.

The alleged cartel, which the plaintiffs call the "OPEC" of potatoes, bribed, threatened and coerced nonmembers of UPGA to comply with the association’s production scheme, according to the complaint filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
