Schumer Opposes Dow Corning Duty Exemption

Law360, New York (October 19, 2010, 4:10 PM EDT) -- Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has urged the U.S. Department of Commerce to deny Dow Corning Corp.'s request to allow the company to import underpriced Chinese and Russian silicon without paying anti-dumping duties, arguing that an exemption would hurt a New York metal plant.

In a letter sent to the agency on Monday, Schumer told Andrew McGilvray, executive secretary for the DOC’s Foreign-Trade Zone Board, that granting a foreign-trade subzone request to Dow Corning could jeopardize nearly 100 jobs at a Globe Specialty Metals Inc. facility in...
