Nurse, Dr.'s Sentences Upheld In Medicare Scam Case

Law360, New York (October 19, 2010, 7:55 PM EDT) -- A federal appeals court on Tuesday rejected challenges by a nurse and a doctor to prison sentences stemming from their alleged roles in a scheme to bilk Medicare of millions of dollars in reimbursements for medically unnecessary treatments for HIV patients.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit affirmed nurse Sandra Mateos' seven-year sentence and Dr. Ana Alvarez's 30-year sentence in a 45-page opinion. Their convictions were also affirmed.
