DOD Seeks Tighter Rules For Vessel Crews

Law360, New York (October 25, 2010, 4:40 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Defense has proposed an amendment to the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement that would implement a legislative change reducing exemptions and toughening certification standards for foreign employees on U.S. contractor vessels.

The DOD on Monday issued an interim rule to enforce a provision of the 2009 Defense Authorization Act requiring that foreign nationals working on vessels under charter or contract with the DOD hold valid U.S. Merchant Mariner’s Documents or transportation security cards.
