Settlement Nixed In Margarine Health Claim Class Suits

Law360, New York (November 17, 2010, 7:09 PM EST) -- A federal judge has rejected a settlement between Unilever US Inc. and consumers who accuse the company of touting trans fat-filled margarines as healthy but has ordered a special master to help them hammer out a new deal.

Judge James Ware of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Tuesday denied the parties' motion for preliminary approval of the settlement but expanded special master George Fisher's authority to negotiate a revised agreement that addresses the court’s concerns.
