Mass. Jury Nails Lorillard With $200M Award

Law360, New York (December 16, 2010, 8:02 PM EST) -- A Massachusetts jury rocked cigarette producer Lorillard Tobacco Co. with $81 million in punitive damages Thursday for its marketing practices, bringing the total award to roughly $200 million in a landmark tobacco liability litigation decision.

The jury in the Suffolk County Superior Court in Massachusetts found that Lorillard’s marketing, which allegedly included distributing free cigarettes to adolescents in the 1950s, warranted the whopping $81 million punitive award to the family of Marie Evans, a longtime smoker who died of lung cancer at age 54.
