NY Raises Restaurant Minimum Wages, OKs Tip Pooling

Law360, New York (December 17, 2010, 2:53 PM EST) -- The New York State Department of Labor has boosted minimum wages for tipped workers in the hospitality industry and clarified that restaurants may mandate tip pooling, addressing an issue that has spurred suits from restaurant workers opposed to pooling gratuities.

The state's labor department filed an order making the changes with the New York Department of State on Tuesday, in a move that will require employers in the hospitality industry such as restaurants and hotels to pay the increased wages starting Jan. 1.
