Dow Corning Loses Bid To Import Duty-Free Silicon

Law360, New York (December 22, 2010, 2:10 PM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Commerce on Wednesday blocked a request by Dow Corning Corp. to import Chinese and Russian silicon metal duty-free, garnering praise from two senators who had opposed the bid.

Commerce’s Foreign-Trade Zones Board denied the metal manufacturing powerhouse's August application to import the underpriced silicon to a foreign-trade zone in Kentucky.

The prohibition on dumped silicon in the area would protect jobs at a manufacturing plant operated by Globe Metallurgical Inc. in Beverly, Ohio, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said Tuesday.
