Microsoft Slams Apple's Bid To Own 'App Store' Name

Law360, New York (January 12, 2011, 4:33 PM EST) -- Microsoft Corp. has challenged Apple Inc.'s attempt to own exclusive rights to the “App Store” name for its online shop that sells applications for iPhones and other devices, claiming that the phrase is too generic to warrant a trademark.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant filed a summary judgment motion with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s trademark trial and appeal board on Monday, seeking to prevent Apple from securing App Store as a trademark.
