Reid, Pelosi Back Health Reform In 6th Circ. Battle

Law360, New York (January 21, 2011, 7:26 PM EST) -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.; and a score of other Democratic lawmakers filed an amicus brief Friday with the Sixth Circuit asserting the constitutionality of President Barack Obama’s landmark health care overhaul.

The so-called individual mandate included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — which requires all Americans to purchase a minimum amount of health insurance by 2014 or face a tax penalty — does not overstep Congress’ constitutional authority under the commerce clause, the 21 senators...
