Vodafone, Orange Face €63M In Antitrust Fines

Law360, New York (February 15, 2011, 12:19 PM EST) -- Romania’s antitrust watchdog on Tuesday fined France Telecom SA’s Orange and Vodafone Group PLC more than €63 million ($85 million) for keeping a lower-priced rival from using their networks.

The country’s Competition Council hit Orange with a €34.8 million fine and Vodafone with a €28.3 million fine for abusing their dominance in Romania’s telecom market.

Though Romania liberalized its fixed telephone service sector in 2003, the two companies still hold a monopoly over the market, according to the regulator, which began investigating the companies in 2006...
