Retired Plumber Wins $41M In Calif. Asbestos Case

Law360, New York (May 12, 2011, 5:20 PM EDT) -- A San Francisco jury on Wednesday ordered wallboard maker Kaiser Gypsum Co. Inc. to pay $20 million in punitive damages to a retired plumber suffering from mesothelioma who previously won $20.2 million in an asbestos suit against Kaiser, contractor FDCC California Inc. and others.

After a three-week trial and a half-day of deliberations, the state court jury awarded the $20 million punitive award after unanimously finding that Kaiser, a joint compounds and wallboard materials maker, had acted with oppression or malice, according to Brayton Purcell LLP,...
