MGA Seeks $177M Over Mattel Spy Games

Law360, Los Angeles (May 26, 2011, 8:06 PM EDT) -- MGA Entertainment Inc. on Thursday asked a California federal judge to level $177 million in punitive damages against Mattel Inc. in a trade secrets and contract battle over a former Mattel employee's idea for Bratz dolls, saying only a large award would deter the toy giant from spying on rivals.

In April, an eight-person jury found that Mattel misappropriated trade secrets related to MGA's Bratz line of dolls, and awarded the smaller company $88.4 million, or $3.4 million for each of 26 violations. At a hearing...
