ERISA Suit Against Cigna Units Wins Partial Class Cert.

Law360, New York (June 13, 2011, 1:55 PM EDT) -- A Massachusetts federal judge on Friday granted provisional class certification in a suit accusing two Cigna Corp. units of failing to pay out death benefits on life insurance policies issued under employee benefit plans.

U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns provisionally certified two subclasses in the action against Life Insurance Co. of North America and Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., saying that the court would allow additional discovery to determine the eligibility of some potential class members.
