Gates Warns Cuts Could Trim Military Capabilities

Law360, New York (June 15, 2011, 2:44 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Defense won’t be able to meet President Barack Obama’s goal of making $400 billion in spending cuts over 12 years without reducing the military’s overall capabilities, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday.

In his last appearance before Congress as secretary, Gates told the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee that achieving the proposed savings would require “real cuts” and “real choices” that go well beyond recent DOD efforts to reduce overhead costs.
