11th Circ. Upholds Sentence In $110M Ga. Mortgage Fraud

Law360, New York (June 14, 2011, 4:40 PM EDT) -- The Eleventh Circuit on Tuesday upheld a 28-year conviction for an Atlanta real estate developer found guilty of perpetrating a $110 million mortgage fraud scheme, the largest such scheme ever in the state of Georgia.

The appeals court ruled that a lower court correctly sentenced Phillip E. Hill, 54, according to sentencing guidelines, and that the sentence was not unduly harsh even though co-conspirators in the massive scheme received comparatively lighter prison terms because he was the “kingpin” who “orchestrated the whole thing.”
