Anadarko, Kerr Pay $17M To Settle Gas Royalty Suit

Law360, New York (June 20, 2011, 4:46 PM EDT) -- Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Kerr-McGee Corp. have agreed to pay more than $17 million to settle a Texas suit that claims they knowingly underpaid royalties owed on natural gas produced from federal and Indian leases, the U.S. Department of Justice said Monday.

The two were among several oil and gas companies sued in 1998 by Harrold Wright, who alleged that the companies violated the federal False Claims Act by lying about the amount of money they owed to the government under gas leases. The companies improperly...
