New York Sued Over Firefighter Hiring Practices

Law360 (May 22, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Justice has sued New York City for using written examinations that allegedly discriminate against black and Hispanic firefighters.

In a complaint filed Monday with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the DOJ alleged that written exams from 1999 and 2002 disparately affected black and Hispanic applicants, and that the exams failed to determine who would make a good firefighter.

It is the first discrimination lawsuit the DOJ has brought against a major municipal fire department since 1991....
