Ex-AK Steel Workers Entitled To Benefits, Judge Says

Law360, New York (June 27, 2011, 4:17 PM EDT) -- An Ohio federal judge on Monday ruled that AK Steel Corp.'s pension plan must pay benefits to a class of laid off workers despite its argument that the workers signed away their rights in severance agreements.

U.S. District Judge Sandra S. Beckwith said that the plaintiffs — AK Steel workers who signed releases when they lost their jobs — did not knowingly sacrifice their pension benefits and cannot have them stripped away by the contracts they signed.
