'Chipmunks' Owner Claims Tribute Album Infringes IP

Law360, New York (June 29, 2011, 6:47 PM EDT) -- The owner of the rights to cartoon characters and music act “Alvin and The Chipmunks” filed suit last week in California federal court, accusing producers of a Chipmunks tribute album of unfair competition and trademark and copyright infringement.

Three companies sold a “cheap, artistically inferior knockoff” of the soundtrack to a popular 2007 film featuring the three rodents with the famously high-pitched voices, but the defendants failed to obtain licenses to use the intellectual property, according to a complaint filed June 23 by Bagdasarian Productions LLC....
