US To Pay $100M To End Xcel Nuclear Waste Fight

Law360, New York (July 8, 2011, 5:24 PM EDT) -- The U.S. government will pay $100 million to Xcel Energy Inc. to settle suits in the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims over its failure to set up a nationwide nuclear waste storage facility, the energy company announced Friday.

The company will pass the proceeds of the settlement on to its customers, it said. Xcel subsidiary Northern States Power Co. has had to pay tens of millions of dollars to store waste in Minnesota that the U.S. was supposed to collect but hasn't,...
