Suit Blames Diabetes Drug Byetta For Injuries, Deaths

Law360, New York (July 18, 2011, 2:50 PM EDT) -- About 40 individuals sued Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Eli Lilly & Co. in California state court Friday, claiming the companies failed to warn consumers that using diabetes drug Byetta could lead to pancreatitis, kidney failure and even death.

Since approving Byetta in April 2005 for treating type 2 diabetes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued multiple warnings about the drug — in August 2008 after receiving reports the drug was tied to two deaths and six cases of severe pancreatitis, and in November 2009...
