Icahn Says Motorola Should Cash In On Patent Portfolio

Law360, New York (July 21, 2011, 10:22 PM EDT) -- Activist investor Carl Icahn said Wednesday that Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. should shop its patent portfolio around to maximize shareholder value and capitalize on the demand for wireless technology patents from behemoths like Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc.

Icahn said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that Motorola's patent portfolio was substantially larger than Nortel Networks Inc.'s 6,000-patent portfolio, which sold for $4.5 billion earlier in July to a consortium that included Apple, Microsoft and Research in Motion Ltd....
