Reporter Can Keep Sources Secret In CIA Leak Case

Law360, New York (August 1, 2011, 5:44 PM EDT) -- A Virginia federal judge ruled Friday that New York Times reporter James Risen must testify at the upcoming criminal trial of an ex-CIA officer accused of leaking classified information, but that prosecutors cannot force him to reveal his anonymous sources.

Prosecutors had issued a subpoena for Risen in May, seeking information on the author's reporting on an operation to disrupt Iran's nuclear weapons program in a 2003 article and a 2006 book, for which former CIA operative Jeffrey Sterling was allegedly an anonymous source.
