Site's Calif. Ads Confer Jurisdiction: 9th Circ.

Law360, New York (August 9, 2011, 3:10 PM EDT) -- In a ruling with significant implications for jurisdictional law involving websites, the Ninth Circuit ruled Monday that an Ohio-based celebrity gossip site that ran advertisements from California-based companies must face a copyright infringement suit in California court.

The appeals court ruled that California courts have jurisdiction because the site run by Brand Technologies Inc. purposefully directed its actions at the state by using ads from California businesses. The decision reversed the Central District of California's dismissal of the suit for lack of jurisdiction.
