Car Lender Recorded Customers' Phone Calls: Suit

Law360, New York (August 9, 2011, 4:02 PM EDT) -- A California plaintiff filed a putative class action in state court on Monday accusing car title lender Wheels Financial Group Inc. of recording private telephone calls to customers without their consent or knowledge.

Joshua Thornley alleges Wheels Financial, which does business as 1-800LoanMart, routinely recorded outbound calls to California customers, but didn’t notify them or obtain their permission beforehand, as required under state law.

Wheels Financial markets itself as the “largest car title loan lender in California,” and also serves Arizona and New Mexico.
