Ciena Sues Nortel Over Communications Networking Patents

Law360, New York (January 18, 2005, 12:00 AM EST) -- Optical equipment maker Ciena Corp. has filed a federal lawsuit against Canadian rival Nortel Networks, alleging that Nortel infringes six patents relating to Ciena's communications networking technology.

The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas, does not specify damages.

Three of the patents in question are related to Ciena's Asynchronous Transfer Mode switching technology. Two relate to Ciena's wave division multiplexing technology, and one is connected to Ciena's Sonet technology.
