Mattel Sues UMG Over Motown Metal Mark

Law360, New York (November 29, 2011, 6:24 PM EST) -- Mattel Inc. filed suit Friday seeking to overturn a decision by a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office board that found the name Motown Metal, which the toymaker attempted to trademark, diluted Universal Music Group Recordings Inc.’s Motown mark.

El Segundo, Calif.-based Mattel’s suit is asking a California federal court for an order reversing the September decision issued by the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, which refused to grant Mattel’s trademark application for Motown Metal, the name of a line of Hot Wheels toy cars.
