Kanye West, Jay-Z Fire Back In 'Watch The Throne' IP Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (December 16, 2011, 12:50 PM EST) -- Kanye West and Jay-Z asked an Illinois federal court on Thursday to throw out a copyright lawsuit lodged against them by soul singer Syl Johnson, who claims the duo sampled his hit “Different Strokes” without permission on their joint concept album “Watch The Throne."

West claims he sought permission to sample Johnson's funk song on his earlier album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” but denied that he used samples of “Different Strokes” without permission in “Watch The Throne,” which was released in August.
