Barnes & Noble May Spin Off Nook Unit

Law360, New York (January 5, 2012, 5:51 PM EST) -- Bookseller Barnes & Noble Inc. is in talks for a possible spinoff of its Nook electronic reader business in order to maximize its financial gain from the product line's burgeoning popularity, the company announced Thursday.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it was pursuing exploratory work and reviewing what would be necessary to split apart the e-reader business, which has driven substantial growth for the retail chain in the past two years.
