Chevron Loses Bid To Freeze $18B Ecuador Judgment

Law360, New York (January 6, 2012, 2:49 PM EST) -- A federal judge on Friday blocked Chevron Corp.'s attempt to avoid paying an $18 billion judgment to a group of Ecuadoreans who claim the company polluted vast stretches of rain forest in their country.

U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan denied Chevron's request for a so-called order of attachment in its case against the plaintiffs, an action the oil giant filed in New York after an Ecuador court found its predecessor Texaco contaminated Ecuador's Oriente region and harmed its inhabitants.
